Signature Paperwhite for the (mostly) Win!
I had been thinking about replacing my MANY years old Voyage for some time. Is was still mostly working OK, with the exception of the battery not holding its charge quite as long as before. As is normal for me, I researched and read just about every review I could find. But I sensed that there were some of what I considered fairly critical factors not mentioned in the reviews I found. It is with that in mind that I offer my take on the newest Paperwhite, and in particular, how it compares with the beloved Voyage. Point of interest, the new Signature Paperwhite is delivered Ad-Free. First, some numbers. (Measurements are to the closest reasonable fraction) Size: Voyage: 4-1/2" W x 6-5/16"H x ~1/4" T; Paperwhite: 5" W x 6-7/8" H x ~1/4" T One of the photos show the two devices laid on top of one another. Screen: V: 3-9/16" W x 4-3/4" H; P: 4-3/16" W x 5-5/8" H For reference, the Voyage used a USB-Micro plug for charging, and the On/Off switch was a small round button on the upper right rear of the unit while looking at the screen. The Paperwhite uses a USB-C plug (a nice update, as it means one less cable to carry when traveling) and the On/Off switch is located on the lower edge of the case just right of center. In use: The screen brightness of both units are pretty comparable. I find the settings screen to be a bit more confusing than earlier Kindles (this is my 4th one over many years), but all the usual stuff is there. Personally I didn't care much for the off-white WARMTH setting; but I realize that will be a very individual thing for most users. Many of the reviews I read spoke about how FAST the new Paperwhite is at page turns. Those comments are spot on! Page turns with this new device are no joke; as quick as anyone could possibly want them to be (IMHO). But the page turn issue raises for me what is about my only real complaint with the new device. As compared to the Voyage, which had physical FWD and BACK page turn buttons on both the left and right sides of the screen, there are no such buttons on the new PW. This has taken some getting used to and I have had to adapt to the lack of those (Haptic feedback) buttons from the Voyage. With the new device you must either swipe or press the correct part of the screen in order to go fwd or back a page. For me (a right-handed reader) that means a right hand hold and an easy motion fo move fwd a page, but a shift in my hold to go back a page (or more). A minor point to be sure, but something to consider, depending on how you hold your device for reading. While I have not actually measured battery life per charge, it is pretty decent. I read with mine just about every day, and EVERY night at bedtime. On a recent 8-day trip away from home, I went with a fully charged device and didn't have to charge it during the entire trip. This included some extended reading while on the plane from NM to the east coast and back. The photos included here should show much of what you might want to see about the physical sizes of the Signature PW and the Voyage, as well as some of the screen views while reading in the same book. I hope this review helps fill some of what I thought were notable gaps I found in my research of the new device. Would I buy it again? You bet! It represents a pretty fair upgrade to my much older Voyage. But I sure do miss those page turn buttons!

My very first kindle was a Paperwhite, pretty much when they first came out, and then I switched to the Fire because I wanted to be able to do more than 'just' read. Well, my priorities changed, and I really wanted to get back to having something 'just' for reading again with a screen I could read in the sun. I was super nervous to get a Paperwhite because one of my main complaints with my first one was the lag in the page-flip. However, after talking to anyone I met/knew who had one and drowning them in questions, then realizing that many years had passed since my first one came out and they were likely much better quality now, I decided to finally take the plunge. (Well, my husband bought it for me as a birthday present, but it was on my wishlist!!!)
And I'm glad I did. I've had this now for about 4 months, and I use it every single day. All day. Even though I miss the page flip from the Fire that makes it look like you're turning actual pages, and is smoother, the Paperwhite page-flip doesn't bother me as much as I was worried about.
I love how crisp the screen is, how easy it is to read, and that my eyes don't get tired from staring at a screen for hours at a time. I love that I can easily download books from KU, and even have limited browser access for signing up for newsletters, or downloading extra content from authors.
It is so thin and light, you can barely feel it in your hand, and I love that, but bought a case with a sleep/wake cover because I am over-protective of my devices (ESPECIALLY my kindles), and it is still insanely thin. I am happy with the quality, even though I read tons of conflicting reviews, and am confident it will be durable and hold-up for a long time because I baby my devices.
I decided to live on the wild side and choose the green kindle (which is a gorgeous color that I promptly covered with a case (oops)), rather than the black I usually choose, and am very happy with it.

I have great expectations with this kindle. Normally I keep all my old kindles but a flood put that idea to rest really quick. So I had to get a kindle for my reading pleasure, and decided this one will do the trick. I has. Upon arriving at my home, I saw from the beginning that I could keep the setup I made on my Oasis. I was quickly setting up my next read and on my way to exploring literary treasures with my new paperwhite. I am 100% satisfied with this purchase.

Updated after a few days of playing with my paperwhite....

If my words were not encouraging enough for you, listen to this.

Each kindle that I had was it's own little world. That meant that as I was setting up the latest purchase, I had to start from the beginning creating collections and moving the individual books to the proper place. It turns out that the paperwhite not only looks like an Oasis, but it copied the exact way the books were in the collections. And all I did was turn it on and immediately started to plan which would be my first read with this kindle.

    Life is good!

I bought this in November 2024 and have been using it since then. Wanted to give it some time to write a review. This is my first Kindle so I have no point of reference other than I always said I would only ever read “real” books (as in print). Let me tell you - I was wrong. I absolutely love this! The battery lasts forever (unless you’re mass downloading books to your library, which I have done and that does eat the battery but understandably so). It connects seamlessly to Goodreads and I absolutely love how I can always have my place kept on it. The screen was the selling point for me - it does not feel like reading a screen. This is what always kept me away from e-readers, but this Kindle is absolutely perfect. The colors on screen are great and I have not had any quality issues that some other reviewers had with ghost lines, etc. it seems very durable (I have a case on it though). I bought the raspberry and the color is stunning. I got it on sale and would buy over and over again. I absolutely love it and it will be getting an even bigger workout from me this summer. Full recommendation.

I've been thinking about getting a Kindle for over a year and spoke with friends who've owned one and they all liked it for the most part...I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the feel and smell of a paper book and as I am a prolific reader I spend way too much a month on buying physical books...decided to try the Kindle hoping with the Unlimited I will spend less...another reason for getting a Kindle is that certain series I have been reading some of the books are only on Kindle and/or an extra excerpt is also o ly on Kindle...received my Kindle Paperwhite the other day...took a bit longer to set up but once that was completed it was easy to download books...I have not read any as of right now I have 30 books sitting on my vanity waiting to be read and another 5 or so on the way...YES..reading is a passion of mine since I was a little child...we'll see how the Kindle holds up to all my reading!!!
